Changes Likely For NCLB Earlier this year, the Obama administration discussed plans to change the No Child Left Behind act with the media. Journalists and education administrators alike thought Obama was bluffing, trying to create action in policy makers. It was no bluff. The Obama administration asked Congress to rewrite the No Child Left Behind law on Monday, March 14, in an effort to accelerate its public education overhaul, one of Obamas major goals, according to an article in the Washington Post. The Obama administration has been aggressively pursuing education reform and plans to have the new version of No Child Left Behind law implemented by the fall of 2012. I want every child in this country to head back to school in the fall knowing that their education is Americas priority, Obama said in a speech at Kenmore Middle School in Arlington, Virginia. Lets seize this education moment. Lets fix No Child Left Behind. Education Secretary Arne Duncans announcement that 82 % of public schools could be labeled failing in 2011 up 37% from 2010 sparked this action. But, some education experts believe that Duncans numbers are inflated. However, lawmakers may not have enough time to change this bill before next fall. Other debates such as merit-based teacher salaries, teacher tenure and public vouchers for students to attend private schools could further complicate the process. With his changes, Obama plans to take most of the federal oversight out of average- and well-performing public schools but then use aggressive measures and oversight to fix underachieving schools. The original bill was created in 2002 by former President George W. Bush to addresses school performance ratings, standardized testing, teacher quality, academic standards and equity for lower-income students. Currently, the No Child Left Behind law requires schools to test their students every year in reading and math, measuring their progress in closing achievement gaps. Schools that do not test well can face penalties as strict as a state takeover. Lawmakers have been meeting for over a year to reach a bipartisan agreement for this bill. Obama met with House and Senate education leaders in mid-March. Changing the original No Child Left Behind Law was first debated in 2007; however, Congress took no action then.

Não tinha grana para aulas de conversação e o contato com nativos, por mais que fosse facilitado pela Internet, era sempre por escrito. Por causa disso, muitas expressões que não são exatamente as mais corretas eram aprendidas mais facilmente. Por causa disso, eu estava sempre buscando por maneiras mais formais de dizer o mesmo, assim sabia dizer a mesma coisa de formas diferentes, para ajudar na transição entre ambiente formal e coloquial.Porém, como eu era, entre os meus amigos mais próximos, a pessoa que sabia menos Inglês, ninguém me ouvia. Mesmo quando eu queria ajudar, porque já tinha procurado uma forma mais correta de dizer alguma coisa, as outras pessoas recusavam a ouvir o que eu estava dizendo.  Esse tipo de coisa é muito comum quando a gente é adolescente, se os amigos sabem mais é como se a gente não soubesse nada, o que acaba debilitando a nossa auto-confiança na hora de falar Inglês. Lembro bastante de um momento, quando dei conta que até sabia algumas coisas.Um dia, depois das aulas, uma amiga e eu fomos passear. Ela queria fumar um cigarro e não tinha isqueiro. Abordou um rapaz para pedir, mas ele respondeu em Inglês dizendo que não sabia falar Português.  Essa minha amiga, que sabia mais Inglês do que eu, começou a conversar com ele. A dada altura perguntou se eu sabia como dizer isqueiro em Inglês, disse que era lighter, ela não acreditou. It’s also one of the most interestingâ€"and challengingâ€"to tutor because so little of it is scientifically testable the way chemistry or physics are. President Truman supposedly once asked if he could get an economic adviser with only one hand, so they would stop saying “on the one handbut on the other” Ideas in economics come, but they rarely goâ€"they just sort of pile up on one another! Theories like the Laffer Curve, Taylor Rule, Keynesianism, Monetarism, Behavioral Economics, and the Real Business Cycle all attempt to explain the real patterns we see in the economy or to prescribe a set of policies that will best manage it. However, since we can’t do a randomized test with two different economies to see which theories hold water, the process of coming to which theory is best is a long and winding road. One of the newest theories to gain prominence is Mo dern Monetary Theory, or MMT, a theory which has been discussed in economics circles for a long time but suddenly got thrust into the public eye when New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mentioned it in an interview with Anderson Cooper. Plenty of economists stepped in to explain to the public what MMT means and what the implications are. Brad DeLong, who teaches at UC Berkeley, and Noah Smith, who writes for Bloomberg, have two of the best takes in my opinion. The simple version is this: MMT proponents argue that since the Federal Government can create all the money it wants, there is no real need for taxes to fund programs directly. Instead, the government merely needs to pull enough money back out of the economy in the form of taxes, bond sales, or some other method to prevent inflation from getting too high. Supporters say this gives the government more options to deal with economic situations like the 2008 financial crisis in which the economy is depressed and even v ery low interest rates aren’t producing inflation. Others say that this way of approaching the economy gives members of Congress, rather than the experts at the Federal Reserve, too much power over delicate economic balancing acts.So, do students need to start learning yet another economics term?  Probably not yet, at least not in high school! While there are many economic theories discussed in popular economics textbooks, most AP classes follow the AP Course Description, which is updated only every few years. Students can be confident that their tutors will be well prepared to teach them the material most relevant for the test even as new economic ideas gain prominence and old ones are called into question.
